He wrote the narration for the documentary film, "To Be Alive" which played at Johnson's Wax Pavilion at the New York World's Fair and won an Academy award. He received a Guggenheim Fellowship. His poems have appeared in many of the leading and underground magazines, as well as in numerous anthologies and textbooks. He has given poetry readings in hundreds of colleges around the country.Once in front of a fireplace in Carlsbad, California, his face glowing from the fire, happy like a small boy's on Christmas, he told me, "I won't mind when I die; I've been given so much. Steve Jobs, the Apple co-founder who resigned from the company in the mid-1980s and returned a decade later to make Apple one of the most successful technology companies in the world, died on Oct 5, 2011. His accomplishments liken him to Thomas Edison and others as one of History’s greatest inventors/innovators. He lacked a college degree, began by sleeping on the floors of his friends homes, and rose to a pinnacle of success seldom achieved by anyone. He is a Winner Against the Odds.

At age 52, when most people look toward retirement, Ray Kroc began McDonald's, a big company that has remained the # 1 restaurant chain in the world for about half a century. Via his McDonald's franchises, it is believed that he probably made multimillionaires of more people in a shorter time than any other person in modern history. In 1974, he purchased the San Diego Padres baseball franchise. He was, and his estate continues to be, a major philanthropist via the Kroc Foundation and the Ronald McDonald Children's Fund.

I conducted thiw interview with Hall of Fame Jockey, Bill Shoemaker and his wife, Cindy, in June 1980 at both Hollywood Park and at his home in San Marino, California. At that time, Shoemaker, a legend in Thoroughbred Racing, had won more races -- more than 8000 -- and more money -- more than $82 million -- than any jockey in the history of the sport. He has won virtually every stakes race in America including 4 Kentucky Derbies, 2 Preaknesses, 5 Belmonts and 11 Triple Crowns.. Among Shoemaker's record-breaking totals are 10 National Money Titles and 5 championships as the Year's Winningest Rider. He won in England, Ireland, South Africa and Argentina; and he won purses of more than $123 million. He also owned every major Delmar Racetrack record including seven seasonal titles.

It is quite fitting that Nike Corp. be named after a Greek Goddess, as the company's co-founder, Phillip Hampson Knight, has become somewhat of a mythical figure himself. Phillip Hampson Knight, the 7.3 billion dollar net worth, enigmatic figure at the helm of the most successful athletic company in the history of the world, has become a legend, especially here in Oregon, his home state. Since Nike currently sells 40% of the nation's athletic footwear, it is sometimes easy to forget about the company's humble beginnings.

From an early age I learned self reliance. I learned that no matter how difficult things may seem on any given day, tomorrow will present an opportunity for a better day. And I developed the capacity for endurance, forbearance, determination. More than anything, I realized that however bad we had it there were other people that had it worse. And I learned never to measure anyone by what they have or don't have in terms of materiality, because I did not rely on the material world to provide us with all the predictability and sustenance we needed.

America is no longer a Democracy. It has become a Corporatocracy ruled by Multinational Corporations. 29 years ago, before the multinational corporations ascended into world rule, life was simpler. We only had to fight against local corporate greed. Our strongest weapon were unions who had the power to strike, to affect the corporate control, to force changes.

29 years ago, the Professional Baseball Players Union called for such a strike and one of the its most outspoken leaders was a young shortstop named Ozzie Smith. I had the honor of interviewing him in July, 1981. The following interview, reprinted from the Winners Hall of Fame, are the thoughts he shared with me ….

It is now 2011 and Pat Casey has brought the Beavers back to 1st Place in the Pac-10 and, more than likely, to the NCAA playoffs for the 6th time in the last 7 years. In that same period, they have won the National Championship twice. Based on how the comebacks that won those championships were made, the Beavers appear to be a team that only knows how to succeed when it can come from behind. Can they still do it when they are in 1st Place? I interviewed Pat Casey back in September, 2007. Why are they still the team to beat? When you read the below interview, conducted 3 ½ years ago, the phrase “Déjà vu” comes roaring to mind…)
