It is quite fitting that Nike Corp. be named after a Greek Goddess, as the company’s co-founder, Phillip Hampson Knight, has become somewhat of a mythical figure himself. Phillip Hampson Knight, the 7.3 billion dollar net worth, enigmatic figure at the helm of the most successful athletic company in the history of the world, has become a legend, especially here in Oregon, his home state. Since Nike currently sells 40% of the nation’s athletic footwear, it is sometimes easy to forget about the company’s humble beginnings.

“Never let them see you sweat,” Dennis Dixon had told me during the week leading up to their win against USC, “That’s the number one thing. That’s why staying positive is so important. If you’re having fun, no one will see you sweat.” These words rang true on November 3rd during the game against Arizona State, when Dennis Dixon held his head high in the face of a devastating injury. Dixon had torn his left ACL in the previous game against Arizona. But he didn’t want anyone to know. It was a secret shared by only Dennis Dixon, his family, his trainer, and Coach Bellotti.

The Ducks may not win all the time, but they do win a great deal of the time, and one thing is for certain: Win or lose, each player is a winner. After some rather disappointing seasons, the 2006-07 team looks to be one for the books. Towards the beginning of the season Duck head coach Ernie Kent remarked, “You’re not looking at a team that’s lacking talent, this team is right here to win games. Hopefully the adversity they’ve been through will help them turn that corner.”
